A seigneur receives rents & homage from his tenants. Typically, rents were paid in corn or poultry.

Guernsey history is just a few clicks away!

La Société Guernesiaise - Guernsey's Historical Society

La Société Guernesiaise was founded in 1882 to encourage the study of the history, natural history, geography and geology of the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the conservation of the Bailiwick’s natural environment and the preservation of its historic buildings and monuments. In many respects, La Société Guernesiaise is similar to the UK Wildlife Trusts. However, its activities extend into many other areas, including history, archaeology and astronomy.

The Priaulx Library - Guernsey's primary genealogical resource

The Priaulx Library, set in picturesque Candie Gardens, has since 1889 been collecting, cataloguing and preserving records, artefacts and books that document Guernsey's history and unique identity. The Library aims to make this important collection as accessible as possible and the archives are open to the public. You can also search our collections online from the Guernsey Libraries catalogue. Our staff are also able to assist with enquiries and work closely with individuals, schools and other institutions on research and educational projects.

Island Archives - Guernsey's resource for important documents

The Island Archives was created in 1986 to collect, preserve and provide access to public and private records relating to the history of the Bailiwick of Guernsey. Spread over three floors of the deconsecrated St Barnabas Church in Cornet Street the Archives houses thousands of documents, files, books and images that date from the 14th century to the present. They maintain an extensive collection of records of the States of Guernsey, both ancient and modern. Others of historical value are obtained by purchase, deposit or donation from institutions or private individuals. Whilst most of the records concern Guernsey, they also hold a number covering the rest of the Bailiwick, including an extensive Alderney collection.

Guernsey Museum - a regional museum with an international collection

The States of Guernsey's current museum service could be said to have originated in the early 1970s with the appointment of the first full-time professional curator. However, in reality the pedigree of the service is much older and includes several earlier private and public museum collections with nineteenth century origins.
