Seigneur of Fief FantÔme

The current Seigneur of Fief Fantôme is an American citizen of primarily English & Scottish descent.  He is fiercely proud of his lineal connections to the British Isles and, specifically, to the loveliest of them all - the Isle of Guernsey. It is due to these connections that he came to possess his 'noble fief' and his obligation to pay homage each Michaelmas, at the Royal Court of Chief Pleas.

Though employed in the ultra-modern industries of digital loyalty and machine learning, the Seigneur's passion lies with the ancient. It is for this reason that he is pursuing a master's degree in medieval history through the University of Cambridge in the UK. His eventual thesis will center upon Guernsey's unique system of feudalism and, specifically, the rather mysterious history of Fief Fantôme - the phantom fief!

Conscious of the serious obligation incumbent in ownership of a Guernsey fief, the Seigneur has worked hard to create value for the Island and its citizens. Initial philanthropic efforts were focused on discovery, acquisition and donation of historically significant insular artifacts - such as the infamous 1832 Cholera Letter or the 1.2kg Queen Victoria Racing Trophy presented by the Queen in 1886. In addition, well over 100 vellum documents, ranging 16th-20th centuries, have been donated to the Island Archives for research.

In 2024, the Seigneur co-founded The Seigneur's Trust with his philanthropic thought-partner, the Seigneur de Poingdestre. Within months, a memorandum of understanding existed with California State University Channel Islands and an inaugural group of American scholarship students were hosted in Guernsey by the Island's Chief Archaeologist, Dr. Philip De Jersey. Establishing a mutual pipeline for students to study either in the US or UK Channel Islands is certain to build awareness of each location's unique environmental and historical significance.

In the year ahead, the Seigneur is focused on continuing to build connections between Guernsey and its North American diaspora. Communities like Guernsey County, Ohio or Guernsey, Wyoming were settled by Island immigrants who literally etched their names into the American frontier. Despite this mutual history, very little collaboration exists today between these populations and resources available on the Island. The Seigneur has begun to change that.

Having visited Guernsey County, Ohio three times in 2025, alignment now exists between County and Insular leaders - in the form of formal proclamations of intent to "twin." The County Historian of Guernsey County, Rick Booth, traveled to the Island in 2025 as a guest of the Seigneur. There, Mr. Booth was an honoured guest of the Crown at Chief Pleas and the banquet following - where he delivered the keynote. Additional travel will occur in 2026 when County Commissioners and Island Leaders exchange delegations. With any luck, that future trans-Atlantic alignment will make both sides stronger.

The Seigneur lives a quiet life with his wife and three young children. As a lay historian, he welcomes questions about Guernsey, its history and its people. Should you wish to learn more, or desire to experience the Island's rich culture for yourself, we hope you will consider reaching out.

Note: The Seigneur de Fantôme is also the Lord of the Manor of Sewell, Bedfordshire. This lordship is registered and verifiable with HM's Land Registry under extract #BD286244.
